Trailblazer Zhang Liangwei of China and Japan's top player, Shigeki Maruyama, will start the fireworks as the Visa Dynasty Cup tees off today with Asia seeking to defend the title they won so admirably in 2003.

Two of the biggest names in Asian golf will face off in today's 'awesome foursome' competition with Zhang partnering compatriot Liang Wenchong and Maruyama paired with Keiichiro Fukabori in today's alternate shot competition.

The match should set the scene for what should be a great weekend of golf at Mission Hills Golf Club.

Zhang was looking forward to teeing up with Maruyama in today's opening match as he finally crosses paths with the world number 24, who recently competed in the US Masters in Augusta, Georgia.

Zhang and Maruyama could also play against each other in Sunday's final round singles, depending on the draw made by the team captains.

For 39-year-old Zhang, it's just another day at the office, but the top Chinese golfer was definitely in the mood for victory as Team Asia hinge their hopes on the ever-reliable Zhang. 'I'm very happy to partner Liang Wenchong,' said Zhang, a five-time winner on the Asian Tour. He enjoyed a very strong season in Japan last year and has started the season well this year too. He will not be intimated by the Japanese players. It's going to be exciting playing against Maruyama.

'The Japanese team has all strong points and no weaknesses. This tournament is much better than the first one [in terms of quality of players]. Our final objective is to win the tournament and help promote golf in Asia. I am hoping to have a chance to play against Maruyama on the final day [singles]. All the pairings are decided by the captains and not by me.'
