TINA Chan Chi-yan was the star at the Jockey Club Government Secondary Technical School 30th swimming championships when she broke all three records at the meet and clinched the Grade A girls' championship.

  The Fifth Former edged out her rivals to set records in the 100 m, 50 m breaststroke and 50 m freestyle. She also won a silver in the 21 m freestyle.

  ''I won because most of my competitors had graduated. Otherwise, I would have a poor chance to win. However, breaking records was out of my expectations and I'm pleased with the results,'' Tina said.

  She took up lifesaving last summer which she said had strengthened her swimming skills.

  The 17-year-old is also a water sports enthusiast; she likes windsurfing and canoeing.

  However, the swimming meet will mark a temporary end for Tina's water activities as she has to prepare for the HKCEE.

  On the other hand, Grade A boys' champion Wilson Pang Yuk-fai is already looking forward to next year's gala.

  ''I'll try my best to practise more for next year's meet. I hope I can do better than this year,'' the Sixth Former said.

  Wilson won a gold in the 50 m backstroke, silver medals in the 50 m breaststroke and freestyle, as well as a bronze in the 21 m butterfly.

  He said he was not a fast swimmer and he attributed his success largely due to the lack of competition.

  Yellow House reaped the reward for their hard work by winning the best cheering team award.

  House captain Karen Lee Ka-wan said apart from the two-week intensive training, the House song was their key to victory.

 ''Our House adviser, who is also our school music teacher, composed a song for us, which serves as the symbol of our House. It boosted our spirit,'' Karen said.
