singer-actor Alex Fong Lik-sun encouraged a group of students to do their best academically as well as in sports and plan their future early to achieve success in life. Fong's advice served as a morale booster for YWCA Hioe Tjo Yoeng College's swimming team, who were preparing for their first training session of the new term. Fong, a former national swimmer, was invited by the school's Parent-Teacher Association to give a motivational talk to more than 600 students earlier this month. 'The purpose of this visit is to understand the problems encountered by students and to offer them some positive advice,' said Fong. 'I hope my experiences will help them.' The 25-year-old Canto-pop star described himself as 'a determined person'. He encouraged the students to try their best in studies and sports and plan their future at an early age. 'Everyone should set goals and persistence is essential for a successful life. I've thought about quitting at times, but if you carry on till the last second, you will finally succeed,' he said. Fong, English Festival 2005 ambassador, also urged students to improve their English and recommended that they start off with the Harry Potter series. Form Four student Gary Lan, 16, said Fong was a role model. 'At his peak, Alex juggled swimming, acting, singing and schoolwork. He must be a very disciplined person. That's why I admire him so much,' he said.
