In the 1980s, a British new wave band cranked out a hit record singing, Everybody Wang Chung Tonight! The group, called Wang Chung, interspersed their name to the words 'have fun' in the song's dance hall-thumping refrain.
Echoes of that refrain could be heard again two decades later. But this time the message from Toronto-based BlogMatrix reads: 'Everybody podcast tonight!'
BlogMatrix, a software company formed in 2003, claims to be the first to market a podcasting application that could help move the online activity from the domain of technophiles to the mainstream.
A podcast is an online audio file stored on a website that can be automatically downloaded to a person's iPod or other portable digital audio player. It is an improvement over traditional online audio in that podcasts are easy to find and can be listened to - or 'time shifted' - at a person's convenience.
Usually encoded in MP3 format, podcasts can also be listened to on any computer. The exponential increase in sales of MP3 players has led to the spread of podcasting activities worldwide.
