Government architects urge upgrade to draw more tourists to 'must-see' site
Government architects have proposed a $142.6 million revamp for The Peak to upgrade facilities and attract more tourists.
Key proposed improvements include pedestrianising the open plaza outside the Peak Galleria, broadening walkways to the Victoria Peak Garden to make it more accessible, and turning a decommissioned Peak tram cabin into a visitor information centre.
'The Peak is the top tourist attraction in Hong Kong. It is a 'must-see' tourist attraction,' according to a paper prepared by the Tourism Commission and Economic Development and Labour Bureau for the Legislative Council yesterday.
'To enhance and sustain Hong Kong's attractiveness as a premier tourist destination, the commission has since 2000 embarked on a tourism district enhancement programme.
'The Peak has been identified for improvement under the programme.
