Although clear days are becoming few and far between in Hong Kong, the operators of the cable car being built on Lantau Island see only bright skies ahead.

'We, like everyone in Hong Kong, are concerned about the level of pollution, but we don't see that impacting on the attraction,' said Ken Chapman, chief executive officer of Skyrail-ITM, the Australian company that will manage the 5.7km-long cable between Tung Chung and the Big Buddha.

One of its main selling points is the 360-degree views of Lantau, Chek Lap Kok airport, the mouth of the Pearl River and the South China Sea offered by the gondolas, one of which was on display yesterday.

But, even if the view is obscured by pollution, Dr Chapman said: 'The close-up views of the country park are really quite spectacular, so I don't see it having a big impact.

'This is without doubt one of the most exciting tourist attractions being built in the world today. It is destined to become one of the city's must-do, iconic tourist attractions.'

The cost of the project has not yet been determined, but the ride will take about 25 minutes.
