Nick Willsher is no James Brown - but he may well be the hardest-working man in show business. For the past five years, Willsher has operated Hong Kong's popular clubbing and entertainment website hkclubbing.com. To celebrate the half decade, the site will host its first party, tomorrow night, headlined by top female DJ LadyStar. 'Even though we've supported hundreds of events, we've never done one of our own,' Willsher says. 'Basically, the idea is a big thank you to advertisers, promoters, DJs, writers - and anyone who's contributed in some way. 'We want to get everyone together. I have a day job and generally don't have the chance to meet people face to face. This is an opportunity to meet those I've been working with for years though never met. It's going to be a large networking function for everyone. 'It's also a chance for regular visitors to the site and forum users to meet in person, and allow me to thank them for getting involved and making it all work.' And work it has. The site gets an average of 2,500 so-called visits worldwide every day, with people checking out the event listings and forum sections. 'We update the site daily,' says Willsher, 27. 'The nature of promoters here is very last minute. So it suits the internet much more than the printed press. 'Promoters also regularly give us the information first, and we always have the advantage that if anything changes, we can update our information immediately. 'Our forums now have more than 2,000 members. There's regular debate and discussion on all manner of entertainment topics.' With a background in the hospitality and service industry, Hong Kong-born Willsher returned to the city five years ago after graduating from university in Britain 'When I came back, I found it hard to find out what was going on here. Everything seemed very underground in terms of what was happening around town,' he says. 'I thought there must be other people out there who would want to know what's going on. Why not try to collect all the available information and put it out through one reliable source?' The site had a modest start: one standard page hosted through a free website. 'I was paying to go to every party, taking photos, then rushing home to work on the site,' he says. 'It was only after about a year and a half that promoters started to take me seriously.' Since those humble beginnings, the website has expanded. 'When I began, the site was mostly trance music-oriented. Now, we have a much broader scope and cover everything from rock to hip-hop and live shows.' To cover even more of the city's activities, Willsher launched HKEntertainment.com recently. 'Promoting opera, for example, doesn't really fit on HKClubbing. We needed this spin-off to expand.' Willsher works about five hours a day on the site, and has no full-time help. 'We have about six or seven part-time staff,' he says. 'Most of the writers are based overseas. 'When someone is interested in writing, I try to fuel their passion and allow them to write about what they're interested in. They're given the exposure to build up their portfolio and we get the content in return. We're always open to people who want to contribute. I update the site and, more importantly, maintain the level of quality. 'There's a small profit at the end of it all,' he says. 'Costs are minimal, so the risk is also minimal. We can afford to take chances with things and try things out. 'The best things that come out of doing this, though, are that people can see the effort that goes into it. That produces other opportunities for me.' One of those opportunities resulted in his present job at an immigration case-management firm, which came about through contacts he made on the site. 'I really enjoy my job. There are so many different things that come from the people I meet through doing HKClubbing. 'The biggest satisfaction is getting the information to people and then hearing that they had a good time as a result. Knowing that they wouldn't have known about the event if it wasn't for the site is a great feeling.'
