The reflective glass walls on some high-rise buildings are proving to be death traps to migratory birds, the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society has warned.

Its comments came after a flock of birds died yesterday after flying into the side of a commercial building in Wing Lok Street, Sheung Wan.

It was the second such case in five months. In November, 12 migratory birds were killed after striking the side of Skyline Tower in Kowloon Bay.

Yesterday a man walking along Wing Lok Street found 12 dead birds scattered around a footpath at about 8.30am. Police said there were no reports of damage to the building.

Cleaners from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department disposed of the birds. Like other dead animals, they were put into plastic bags and covered with disinfectant before being transported to a landfill for disposal, a department spokeswoman said.

Ng Cho-nam, vice-chairman of the bird watching society, said he believed the birds were killed while on their migratory flight path. He explained that local species could avoid similar collisions.
