European firms to test drugs in 500 hospitals European drug firms will offer treatment to patients in 500 mainland hospitals under a deal struck by the Europe-China Commercial Union and a Hong Kong-owned medical centre on clinical testing of their drugs. CanAm International Medical Centre will help the firms test their drugs at the 500 local hospitals in its network. Expatriate doctors will supervise the tests carried out by their mainland counterparts to ensure they conform with international protocol. The centre hopes to extend the co-operation to anti-ageing, cellular biology, stem cell and preventive medicine research. The world's top 10 drugmakers are already conducting drug tests in China, but lack sufficient staff to enforce standards.
