Programme aims to encourage summer reading
The Hong Kong Education City (HKedCity) has launched the 'Happy Reading in the City: Education Community' programme, aimed at encouraging students to read more, especially during the summer holidays.
The project aims to help youths develop good reading habits.
More than 2,000 primary and secondary students attended the programme's opening ceremony last Friday, where they read aloud a 'reading contract' to show their determination to read more.
HKedCity chief executive Jacqueline Cheng Ming-fung reminded parents to encourage their children to choose books they like.
She said: 'If parents push their kids to read books that they don't like, reading will become a burden.'
Ms Cheng said, according to a survey conducted by HKedCity last year, the favourite writer among young people in Hong Kong is Denmark's Hans Christian Andersen, while their favourite book is the Harry Potter series.
