Life is hard for aspiring musicians who play in a band. They face two obstacles - the lack of family support and the lack of opportunities to show off their talents.

U-Sound Association 2005 will stage a joint university band competition in June to help up-and-coming music groups make their mark.

U-Sound was established about 10 years ago and comprises students from band societies at local universities.

The show has been held almost every year over the past decade and the competitors are not necessarily university students.

This year, 12 bands have sent their demo tapes to the association. Eight bands will be selected to compete in the finals on June 13 at Hard Rock Cafe in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Last Thursday, U-Sound organised a 'warm-up' for competitors at City University to give them more stage experience.

'Not all the competitors can enter the finals. The performance gave the musicians a chance to introduce themselves to other bands and young music-lovers,' explained U-Sound committee member, Crystal Li Yuen-ling, 21.
