Two accuse commission of unfair treatment

Doubts have been raised over the eligibility of two former district councillors to vote in the July 10 chief executive poll after yesterday's Election Committee by-election.

Wong Siu-yee and Suen Kai-cheong did not receive their notification to vote in the by-election. But Mr Wong, who works in the textile industry, was still able to cast his ballot in the textile sub-sector yesterday.

The pair say they can still vote for the next chief executive and accused the Electoral Affairs Commission of treating them unfairly by asking them to seek legal counsel to confirm their eligibility.

Mr Suen said the watchdog was wrong to put the responsibility on voters.

'We are exercising our civic duty to choose the chief executive. We shouldn't be held responsible for any legal liability,' he said.

Mr Suen rejected suggestions he would be unable to take part in the chief executive poll if he could not vote in the by-election.
