Actress Zhang Ziyi, 26, has been proud of her ever-improving English, especially after shooting the Rob Marshall-directed movie Memoirs of a Geisha in Hollywood. She raised the subject again last week when promoting a brand of cosmetics in Beijing, according to mainland reports. Zhang said she had stopped working and was now focusing on studying English at a language school in New York. 'I feel that after self-learning and being influenced by the working environment for two years, my oral English has no big problems now,' she said. 'So I take English classes not because I want to handle the voiceovers of Memoirs of a Geisha, but to really stand on my feet to develop my career in the world.' She went on to say she was confident she would 'even get a satisfying result of 500 points in the TOEFL [test of English as a foreign language]'. Hmm. Anyone who is familiar with the TOEFL - which is scored from 310 to 677 - wouldn't find 500 points anywhere near 'satisfying', because you can get 310 points even if you have answered all the questions wrong. But we're happy Zhang has such modest expectations.
