Having won four seats on election body, they want a vote to select the chief executive
Newly elected democrats on the Election Committee yesterday called for a chance to cast a vote for Hong Kong's next leader, even though the July 10 selection seems certain to be a one-horse race.
The democrat camp won four of the 15 seats up for grabs in the committee by-election on Sunday - two in the legal sector and one each in accountancy and higher education.
It is estimated the democrats have the support of 80-plus members on the 800-member committee, which is short of the 100 needed to nominate a candidate. Democratic Party chairman Lee Wing-tat has announced he wants to run and today unveiled his platform.
Five democrat candidates were defeated in the by-elections - one in the accountancy sector, one in planning and all three district councillors.
Mr Lee said the outcome was quite good.
