Record audience for finale of Korean TV drama

Updated at 4.58pm: A South Korean television drama set an audience record in Hong Kong by drawing nearly half the territory?s population for the final episode over the weekend, newspapers said on Wednesday.

A record 3.2 million of Hong Kong?s 6.9 million people tuned in for the conclusion of the historical saga Dae Jang Geum on Sunday night.

The series follows a servant girl as she rises from the royal kitchen to become personal physician to a 16th century king.

The rating is the highest ever recorded by local broadcaster TVB, Apple Daily reported. The previous record was held by the local show Nam Chun Nui Oi, which drew 3.07 million viewers, the report said.

Ming Pao Daily News quoted a restaurant industry official as saying business was 10 per cent lower than usual Sunday evening because so many people stayed in to watch the show.
