When anyone takes on a new job or moves into a new field, he or she should keep an open mind and absorb everything around them.

It may take a while to get familiar with the new environment - colleagues, their style of work, the culture and the company ways. But patience and a humble attitude can help you achieve a smooth transition from the old workplace to the new.

No matter how experienced you are, do not cling to past glories. Start with the attitude that you are in the new workplace to learn rather than to teach people what they do not know, or you may run into trouble.

Try to take relevant courses to increase your knowledge about the new field you are now in. Be patient as you go about learning the different things that now confront you. Synchronise your pace of work with that of your new company.

Networking to create a circle of contacts is useful for anyone who is starting out in a new area. Seminars and conferences will give you opportunities to meet people in your field, like-minded colleagues and potential clients. Referrals and word-of-mouth are good ways to establish a network of people who could be important or helpful to you.
