A LOT more is going to be heard of Gay Pegasus II (5-1), the vastly impressive winner of the eighth event on yesterday's holiday card at Sha Tin.

 Gay Pegasus II had looked the part late last season when winning a griffin race for Darren Beadman, was promoted to Class Three and at his first outing in an open field looked well above this company.

 Sired by French Derby winner Assert, the David Oughton-trained galloper simply scythed through at the end of this 1,400-metre outing to win by a length and three-quarters.

 Super Tension (9-1), who had an ordinary campaign last season, finished second for Randy Romero with claimer Francis K. S. Lam third on Excel Treasure (60-1).

 Race favourite Amigo (9-2) finished fourth having looked a real chance in running but finding nothing against the withering finishing run of the winner.

 Gay Pegasus II was ridden by Irish champion jockey Mick Kinane who said: ''He certainly feels as if he has what it takes.

 ''He quickened very well and I have no doubt that he is going to need longer than this to be really effective. He will need at least a mile and very soon.

 ''It was a very good win and I think he's a horse you would look forward to riding again - and winning on again,'' he added.

 Good money for Global King (5-1) went astray and the late betting plunge on Amigo was a little off target. Following an eye-catching run behind Winning Chance last time he looked a logical chance and travelled well for John Marshall in the run.

 But he found little when the field fanned out at the new cutaway rail and rather plodded to the line in third.

 Super Tension looks certain to win a race soon on this run and would be one to watch out for at Happy Valley.

 And Excel Treasure, with one unplaced run behind him, is also on the right track.

 Meanwhile, local ace Tony Cruz got the best out of stayer Icy Bet (6-1) to win what looked on paper a tricky seventh event.

 Icy Bet, prepared by Peter Ng Bik-kuen, lagged in betting behind 3-1 favourite Sagar who had beaten him home last time they met but the places were significantly reversed yesterday with Sagar finishing third, the surprising Crown Commander (7-1) splittingthe quinella.

 Icy Bet had not looked ready at his first start of the season on opening day but improved significantly at his second outing when finishing third to Sterling Town and Sagar.

 On that occasion Cruz lodged an objection against Sterling Town on the grounds of interference. It was thrown out but Icy Bet did not get a clear run.

 But it was fairly plain sailing for Cruz yesterday as the leading rider - on the mark in the opener with hot-pot Prince Baikal - made sure he was going to be in the firing line whatever happened.

 The 10-strong field broke into two with a fairly hectic pace set by Helene Delight (80-1), with apprentice Simon H. K. Yim aboard.

 Quest For Gold (8-1), who has been running in great form, was in the leading brigade while Icy Bet was tacking on and going well.

 As Helene Delight fell away Quest For Gold was ready to take it up and put in some telling strides as both Sagar and Icy Bet began their runs. But it was Crown Commander, also in the leading foursome, who took second.
