City University (CityU) will need all the support they can get when they play Dutch league champions PSV Eindhoven in the preliminary round of the HKFC Philips Lighting International Soccer 7s. The Hong Kong Philips University League champions, who are in Group B, will also take on local First Division clubs, Kitchee and Happy Valley, in the tournament which will be held at Hong Kong Football Club on May 28 and 29. CityU coach Gordis Yau encouraged students to come and support his team as they aim to cause an upset and reach the quarter-finals. Entry will be free for under-16s. 'We are representing Hong Kong youth in the competition and it would be great if a big group of secondary school and university students cheered us on,' said Yau. Leading European clubs, including Manchester United, Glasgow Celtic, Glasgow Rangers and defending champions Aston Villa, are sending teams to Hong Kong. Arsenal, the 2001 Cup winners, have withdrawn due to an injury crisis. They will be replaced by top Australian side, Sydney FC. CityU team captain Donald Ha Shing-chi said his side was not afraid of playing against professional teams. 'We will go into the matches thinking we can win,' said Donald, a Year Three English for Communication student. 'We are psyched up and ready for the tournament. We have played in other 7s tournaments before. We know what to expect.' Fitness is the most important factor in 7s, said Yau. 'The games are short. Each half is only seven minutes. Anything can happen. We are strong defensively. It may go to penalties. 'Our opponents may be of a higher standard, but I think we have a chance.' In the Masters tournament (for veterans), the Middlesbrough All Stars include former Manchester United and England defender Gary Pallister, a Player of the Year award winner in 1992. Pallister and other stars of his generation will join two Philips Lighting soccer clinics for primary and secondary school students before the tournament. Young Post will give away tickets for the free clinics which will be held at HKFC on May 26 and 27 from 4.30pm to 6pm. To join, send your contact information to email@example.com , or call 2250-3168.
