The Democratic Party is pushing the government and Sun Hung Kai Properties for more details on the record sale of a luxury flat in The Arch development in West Kowloon. Letters sent to party chairman Lee Wing-tat by housing minister Michael Suen Ming-yeung and the developer last week said the buyer of the 5,353 sq ft penthouse, which sold for $168 million or $31,500 per sq ft last month, was given a discount for his purchase of other flats in the project. The letters did not state the size of the discount, the amount of the entire deal or the number of flats involved, only stressing that 'a small discount' was offered. Mr Lee said last night he was unhappy with this reply and would ask Mr Suen to release more information. He said the transparency of internal property sales had to be increased. The South China Morning Post reported last month that the buyer, a businessman from Beijing, also bought three other apartments for between $15,000 and $17,000 per sq ft, just under the asking price.
