Egg-tart lovers packed the sidewalk on Lyndhurst Terrace yesterday to get a taste of the Tai Cheong Bakery speciality ahead of the shop's closure on May 25. More than 200 people queued for Tai Cheong's traditional treat, described by former governor Chris Patten as the best egg tart in the world. The 51-year-old bakery faces closure after the landlord announced a 110 per cent rise in the rent to $80,000 a month.
Bakery owner Au Yeung Tin-yun has welcomed help from two lawmakers to search for new premises. The landlord has refused to reconsider the rent demand despite appeals from district councillors.
