Villagers in Pokfulam fighting a plague of mosquitoes say sloppy government cleaners are partly to blame for the area's filthy state.

They said piles of rotting rubbish were left for rainwater to wash away - blocking drains and contributing to the build-up of stagnant water, which is a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Chan Kwai-tin, representative of the 2,000 residents of Pokfulam Village, said the government contracted out cleaning to the company offering the lowest price, and paid no heed to its performance.

'Their work attitude is very bad. They tend to do their work little by little instead of cleaning the dirty area thoroughly,' Mr Chan said.

Last week, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department sounded the alarm when the ovitrap index for April showed 22.6 per cent of traps in Pokfulam contained eggs of the Aedes albopictus mosquito, which can spread dengue fever.

Villagers run more than 100 illegal sewage pipes into streams, drawing swarms of mosquitoes.
