A YOUNG crop of players are threatening to topple the old guard in the competition for places in the Hong Kong Davis Cup team.
Hong Kong selectors meet next week to decide whether or not to retain the established players in a bid to beat Group One first-round opponents Indonesia, in March, or to look to the future.
Ed Hardisty, executive director of the Hong Kong Tennis Association, said a decision also remained to be made over Mark Bailey's position as captain.
He named youngsters Thorsten Poelzl, Melvin Tong, as well as fast-improving Murray Bennetto, as possible candidates to challenge experienced players Colin Grant, Pang Lui and Michael Walker.
''We need to sit down and talk about what our aims are for next year,'' said Hardisty.
''If we beat Indonesia, we then meet South Korea. Do we aim for that by selecting the established players, or do we go for a fresh look and aim for the long-term? ''The young players have been doing very well recently. But there are still many options.'' Hardisty said there were many candidates for the captaincy.
