Who? Founder Joan Burstein created Browns with her husband Sidney in 1970. What was once a small boutique on the ground floor at 27 South Molton Street is now one of London's most important fashion destinations. The store quickly expanded into five connecting townhouses, with number 23 being exclusively for men.

What to expect: the store stocks big-name must-haves, from avant-garde and funky to chic and simple.

Fashion finds: the list of labels includes Jil Sander, Vera Wang, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen.

The crowd: fashionistas of all ages with high credit limits.

Other stores: one of its sister stores is Browns Focus, which caters to a younger, cutting-edge clientele. Labels include Sass & Bide, Sonia by Sonia Rykiel, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Tsumori Chisato. Another is Browns Bride, which offers designer wedding gowns, including Badgley Mischka and Reem Acra. Labels for Less is Browns' permanent sale shop, where you can purchase women's and men's designer clothes at bargain prices.
