OVER THE YEARS, lingerie has played an important role in fashion. Since Mary Phelps Jacob invented the modern bra in 1913, undergarments have become more hip than practical and are no longer reserved for under your clothes or in the bedroom.

A glance at the spring/summer catwalks confirms this. Models were spotted sashaying down the runway in slinky slip dresses, lacy camisoles and, of course, bra tops, while brands such as Dior, Versace and now Issey Miyake continue to create lingerie or lingerie-inspired collections.

The bra is a staple in women's lingerie. It was originally created as a support device and a more comfortable alternative to the restrictive corset that women favoured at the beginning of the 20th century. With society slowly abandoning its taboos over the years, the bra evolved as women began to reclaim their sexuality. From the invention of the Wonderbra and Madonna's cone-shaped bra designed by Jean Paul Gaultier to Dolce & Gabbana's racy black versions, it's become an essential fashion item.

Modesty was cast aside when luxury brand Agent Provocateur was founded in 1994, with its tantalising and glamorous lingerie that was sexy without being vulgar.

Today, lingerie is viewed as a fashionable yet glamorous must-have for every woman. It combines practicality with a sense of playfulness that's strictly modern. From more traditional lacy pieces to sexy black items, there's lingerie to suit all tastes and sizes. You can stick with the basics, pamper yourself with luxurious silks or indulge your fantasies with the more lavish pieces that resemble works of art.

'The current trend in lingerie is towards luxurious designs that enhance the natural breast-line without excessive padding,' says Sarah Rutson-Pang, fashion director at Lane Crawford.
