Hong Kong's men's badminton team continued their impressive form as they advanced into the main draw of the 10th National Games yesterday. Comprised mainly of shuttlers who helped Hong Kong stay in group one of the just-completed Sudirman Cup, the squad pulled off a major surprise by winning all three matches in the qualifying rounds held in Yichun, Jiangxi to finish top of the group. The SAR team narrowly defeated Shanghai and Zhejiang in their opening two games, both by 3-2 scores, and prevailed 3-1 over Hubei in their final game. 'They did not expect us to win all three games and were caught by surprise by our performance,' said Hong Kong coach Chan Chi-choi. 'Our top players had competed in the Sudirman Cup and were able to play at their best, while others, especially the youngsters, also showed great courage against top players from other provincial teams.' The women's team, however, could not match the success of their compatriots, losing all three games to Liberation Amy, Jiangsu and Shanghai. In table tennis, Hong Kong's Olympic silver medallists Li Ching and Ko Lai-chak also qualified for the National Games after two victories in the men's doubles in Qinhuangdao, Hebei. Ko had an impressive run in the mixed doubles where he and partner Zhang Rui also ensured a trip to the Games.
