There can't be too many Hong Kong band websites offering informed commentary on the overturning of Falun Gong followers' convictions or the demise of dai pai dong culture, alongside the usual member biographies and CDs for sale.

But this website belongs to local hardcore band King Lychee, and gives an insight into their mission of providing 'an alternative form of education', according to vocalist/guitarist Riz Farooqi.

'The main intent of the band is to empower the powerless - today's youth who have nothing to believe in, or who are confused about who they're supposed to be as opposed to who they want to be,' he says.

'Empowering people with knowledge, with self-confidence, with wanting to learn about certain issues that they may have never thought about - that's what it's all about.'

King Lychee deliver their message of empowerment in an uncompromising way. Hardcore music may sound like angry stuff to the untrained ear, with blistering, feedback-drenched guitars layered over rapid-fire drum beats, but there's no mistaking the positive messages contained in tracks such as Stand Strong and Do Something.

Farooqi says he hasn't always felt empowered himself. Skateboarding - and its accompanying soundtrack of punk, metal and hardcore music - gave him the strength to believe in himself.

'Growing up as a Pakistani in Hong Kong meant that I didn't fit in with any of the 'major' populations. I was embarrassed about who I was and wanted to be something else,' he says.
