Consultation on renaming the University of Hong Kong medical faculty after Li Ka-shing could have been conducted more thoroughly, the faculty's dean said yesterday.
'I admit we did not do enough, especially external consultation. We have not collected views from those who are not staff members,' Lam Shui-kam said.
Legislator Kwok Ka-ki and 29 other medical graduates launched a campaign on Monday to protest against the offer to rename the faculty after Mr Li donated $1 billion.
Some critics called for the resignation of vice-chancellor Tsui Lap-chee, who said on Wednesday the offer could not be withdrawn.
Professor Lam said he had spoken to staff, including those from the medical faculty, about how to express their gratitude to Mr Li. Some had suggested naming a faculty, building or department after him.
Referring to the protest, Professor Lam said he was pleased to learn some medical graduates were still very much concerned about the university.
