PEOPLE WHO are not trained in finance but have the interest and ambition to get into the field should consider the options available for further study.

Among those is a postgraduate diploma in investment management launched this year by the University of Hong Kong's School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE), which can be completed in between six and 12 months.

Daniel Mok, programme director for SPACE's finance division, said that only three Hong Kong institutes offered relevant postgraduate courses - the others are the University of Science and Technology and the main HKU. Both offer master's degrees in finance and investment subjects.

The SPACE course starting this month has attracted about 70 applicants. 'The response exceeded our expectations. We originally thought there would be about 40 and we can see that most of the applicants are not working in finance at the moment,' Dr Mok said.

Enrolment will take place three times a year.

The course consists of six modules: analytical tools for investment management; financial management; debt investments; equity and alternative investments; derivative investments; and portfolio management.
