When a man's star is rising, even the soil he has stepped on is of iconic interest to groupies. This may explain why mainland tour operators have been organising 'cultural tours' that include a visit to St Joseph's Church in Garden Road, the church where the future chief executive - sorry, I mean election candidate - Donald Tsang Yam-kuen and his wife pray every morning. 'People are tired of visiting jewellery shops and goldsmiths; they think we are ripping them off. Now we take them to cultural sites like St Joseph's Church,' said a Guangdong operator quoted in Ming Pao Daily. 'We watch Hong Kong TV a lot in Guangdong and everyone is interested in the next leader of the HKSAR.' The church, however, is none too thrilled about all the extra visitors, according to the paper. 'We have seen more and more mainland visitors,' one priest said. 'We welcome them as individuals, but we would not like to see them visiting as a tour group.'
