Hong Kong have qualified for the Asian Basketball Championship finals after defeating Mongolia in the East Asian zone qualifiers in Yangjiang, Guangdong. Hong Kong, who beat Mongolia 70-62, have been guaranteed one of five qualifying places in the September finals in Qatar despite three defeats. Six teams are playing in the qualifiers. Asian Games champions South Korea thrashed Hong Kong 93-69 in the opening match last week. The territory also lost 77-56 to China and 72-50 against Japan. Mongolia will play their final match against Japan, while Hong Kong take on Taiwan. Even if Mongolia win and Hong Kong lose, the SAR would edge Mongolia on their better head-to-head record. 'Our target was to beat Mongolia and qualify. We have reached the goal,' said Sam Ho Wai-hing of the Hong Kong Basketball Association.
