IMAGINE being the only male in a gathering of 400 chattering Indian ladies in colourful saris. That was the happy lot of Keeping Posted when we joined Hong Kong Indian Women's Club members who were entertaining First Lady Lavender Patten at lunch. But we take Lavender to task for being frightfully underdressed - she wore a frock. When we pointed out that she should have been in a sari, Lavender covered her face in shame and gushed: ''I know, it's quite terrible.'' Club president Chitra Chellaram then led her guest on to the stage, where Lavender was given the gift of a sari and her forehead was dotted while a shawl was placed around her shoulders, giving her an oriental look. ''Does this mean she and Chris will be hosting Indian evenings at their place in Upper Albert Road?'' we inquired. ''Most probably,'' replied Lavender, her face beaming meaningfully. We took our leave with appealing thoughts of the Governor wrapped in a dhoti taking up the lotus position on the verandah of Government House.
