Mobile phone calls track suspected truck thief
The owner of a transport company used a mobile phone to direct police as he followed one of his trucks, which was stolen earlier in the day. The man was driving in Mongkok when an employee called to say someone had stolen the truck in Shamshuipo at 2.30pm. The owner then sighted the vehicle in Nam Cheong Street, Shamshuipo, and followed it, reporting its movements to police, who intercepted the truck in Tseung Kwan O and arrested a 26-year-old man.
Concrete falls in flat
The Housing Department has moved a family in a subsidised flat to another flat after a 15kg piece of concrete fell from the ceiling last Friday. It attributed the accident to the building's age, 26 years, but stressed that the Wan Tsui Estate in Chai Wan was safe.
Man plunges to his death
Retired fireman Chan Wai-san, 67, plunged to his death from the 24th floor of a block of flats in Tin Shui Wai after 90 minutes of negotiations by police and firefighters failed to stop him jumping. Firefighters had inflated an air cushion, but Chan missed it.
