Hutchison Telecommunications has about 325,000 customers for its third-generation (3G) mobile-phone service - an increase of 25,000 since the end of April and evidence, the company says, that subscriber uptake has not slowed over the past month.
Managing director Agnes Nardi also refuted claims Hutchison was offering excessive handset subsidies to lure customers. While the company offered models aimed at price-sensitive customers, it also distributed handsets in the mid to high end of the market, she said.
She reiterated that Hutchison would be able to offer full 3G coverage in MTR tunnels by the end of August.
Last week, the company launched the LG 8380, its sixth exclusive handset from the South Korean manufacturer.
Hutchison owes much of its success with 3G to the LG handsets. It has sold more than 100,000 since launching services more than a year ago.
The LG 8380 is a quad-band phone with Bluetooth connectivity and a digital camera.
