Teenage runner in top form
Form Five student Tang Yik-chun won both the 100 metres and 200m races in the third round of the Watsons Water Athletic King Championships held at the weekend.
The 18-year-old established himself as the best sprinter in Hong Kong after beating national record holder, Chiang Wai-hung, in the 100m at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground on Sunday.
Yik-chun's time of 10.58 seconds was 0.03 seconds faster than Chiang. It followed an impressive effort in the 200m on Saturday, when he was timed at 21.37 seconds, 0.33 seconds ahead of Watsons Athletic Club teammate Lui Ka-ho.
Having finished his school exams, the gifted teenager - who owns the 100m junior record (10.44 seconds) - said he would concentrate on training to improve his fitness and technique.
In the 4x100m relay, Yik-chun teamed up with Chiang, Lau Yu-leong and Leung Chun-wai, hoping to break the record of 39.77 seconds they set in Chongqing last month. Yik-chun, who ran the third leg, handed the baton to Chiang for a final spurt, but the quartet still finished outside the mark at 39.99 seconds.
Yik-chun, still officially a junior, stole Chiang's senior 200m Hong Kong record in the first round of the series at Wan Chai in February.
In the second round in April, Yik-chun underlined his supremacy by breaking his own record and becoming the first Hong Kong sprinter to break the 22-second barrier when he clocked 21.94 seconds during the heats.
