Farm

Sunday, 4pm

Victoria Park

Every Sunday, a corner of Victoria Park becomes Hong Kong's capital of youth culture. Known as Farm, the event provides a space for young people to express their talents and creativity.

Apart from a market offering everything from streetwear to CDs and designer toys, Farm features Hong Kong's only outdoor live music venue, and has showcased some of the city's best alternative acts against a backdrop of trees and the Causeway Bay skyline.

Best described as a Hong Kong version of London's Portobello Market and Tokyo's Harajuku Yoyogi Park, Farm is a joint initiative by the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong, the Eastern District Office and Milk magazine.

Each market vendor is allocated a small space (about 1.5 metres by three metres) to display their wares. The focus is on giving young entrepreneurs a break. It's a great place to browse, buy or simply people-watch.

The Youth Cultural Square hosts an array of events aimed at promoting local talent. Typically, this will be bands and live music, but it's included the likes of the largest X-Game competition in Hong Kong.

This Sunday's band line-up was yet to be confirmed by press time, but the stage has been graced by acts as diverse as electro-popsters Pixel Toy, hardcore band King Ly Chee and emo-rockers Whence He Came (above).

The Youth Cultural Square has also played host to seminars, dance performances, rock climbing and graffiti competitions.

Farm is an active, engaging environment, and there's always something interesting to see. It offers a truly inspiring atmosphere that's rare in Hong Kong. Highly recommended.
