Waiters at the Disneyland Hotel will distribute leaflets to guests wanting shark's fin soup in an effort to dissuade them from ordering the controversial dish.

While refusing to withdraw the item altogether, Disney has teamed up with pressure group Green Power to produce leaflets warning of the potential ecological harm caused by eating shark's fin.

The move is part of a three-step action plan announced by Disney yesterday in response to continuing criticism of its decision to serve shark's fin soup, on request, at banquets at the Disneyland Hotel when it opens in September.

Disney confirmed it would source its shark fins only from what it described as 'reliable and responsible suppliers' who guarantee not to hunt endangered species or engage in 'finning' - where fins are cut off and sharks left to die.

It said it would offer diners at banquets a wide range of dishes that did not include shark's fin. It also said anyone who insisted on the dish would be given the leaflet so they were 'aware of related environmental concerns'.

But Disney spokeswoman Irene Chan Man-tuen insisted the theme park would not bow to repeated demands from some green groups to withdraw the dish altogether and said it had an obligation to offer it.

'The dish is considered an integral part of a Chinese wedding banquet,' she said. 'It is customary for Chinese restaurants and five-star hotels to serve shark's fin soup in Hong Kong.
