If you are ready to start managing your career, here are some exercises to try: Look back at previous jobs, courses or life experiences and ask yourself what you loved and hated about them. What do the answers tell you about work preferences? For example, did you love science projects at school but hate exams? This could suggest that you prefer work that is practical rather than conceptual. Ask yourself what five things you would change in the world if you had the chance. What does your list tell you about the things you value and that motivate you to act? Write a story describing 'My job from hell'. Let your imagination run riot and include as much detail as possible. For example, it could be: 'I am working in a cramped office, my boss is watching over my shoulder and won't let me express my views. My job is dealing with difficult accounting problems. I can't see out of the window and I feel trapped...' Try to fill at least one side of A4 paper. What does your story reveal about what you want from your working life? Identify the achievements or successes of which you are most proud. What did you do to accomplish these? What does this tell you about your natural talents and transferable skills?
