Eye to the Telescope is a promising debut by singer-songwriter KT Tunstall. The part-Chinese, Edinburgh-born songbird unleashes refreshing guitar motifs and beautiful melodies wrapped around her great vocals.
The album, produced by Steve Osborne (U2/New Order/Doves), contains soothing ballads that are a smooth blend of pop and blues with a touch of jazz.
Opening track Other Side of the World is a heartfelt melodic piece about the bitterness of fading love. In Another Place to Fall, Tunstall gives advice to girls who are lost in love.
Black Horse and the Cherry Tree is an impressive up-tempo folky blues track characterised by rhythmic guitar chords and Tunstall's powerful voice. A mellower mood prevails in the comforting acoustic track Silent Sea.
Tunstall's soulful music stands out from the industry's manufactured pop songs. Her next step should be to develop a unique style distinguished from other female singer-songwriters such as Dido, Joss Stone or Australian rising star Missy Higgins.
