Give your home movies a digital makeover with the DVDirect VRD-VC20, touted by Sony as the world's first dual-function DVD writer. Priced at $2,288, it is capable of either stand-alone or computer-attached 'burning' of DVDs.

It also works with analogue camcorders, video cassette recorders and other video sources. The DVDirect VRD-VC20 can help preserve home movies by transferring them direct from tape to DVD in stand-alone operating mode.

DVDirect can record on a two-sided disc - the standard single-side, 4.7-gigabytes, or up to 12 hours of footage, or on the dual-layer 8.5GB. Push the 'REC' button and the device will create a professional-quality DVD video, complete with menu and chapters. The maximum speed for DVD writing is 16x, which allows it to complete 4.7GB of data writing on a DVD-R or a DVD+R disc in six minutes.
