Conservationists have poured scorn on Disney's plan to hand out leaflets to deter people from ordering shark's fin at the Hong Kong theme park and say they will carry on campaigning until the dish is withdrawn.

Disney is working with Green Power to prepare the leaflet in an effort to quell criticism over the decision to sell shark's fin on request at Chinese banquets at the Disneyland Hotel when it opens in September.

The leaflets will be given to any banquet host who insists on shark's fin but Disney says it will not withdraw the dish because it is 'sensitive to local cultures'- a reference to Chinese people's liking for shark's fin at wedding banquets.

However, the compromise was condemned as 'abhorrent' by WWF chief executive officer Eric Bohm who held talks with Disney executives and believed they had agreed to withdraw shark's fin until sustainable sources could be found.

Other green groups have also attacked the move as inadequate and are understood to be preparing to mount a protest to disrupt the opening ceremony of Disney's theme park on September 12 if shark's fin remains available.

Green Power said it opposed any sale of shark's fin at the theme park and only agreed to help produce the leaflet because Disney would not back down on its decision to sell it.
