It was with a mixture of nostalgia and excitement that I went to see Building Heritage: Central Police Station Compound at UMAG. My first home in Hong Kong was on Old Bailey Street, just across from the Central Compound. Many of my days began with coffee on the roof, looking out over this wonderful complex.
The show is poignant, considering the compound's latest residents (the correctional and immigration facilities) will be leaving at the end of this year, and its future is still unclear.
Singaporean photojournalist Ernest Goh took most of the exhibition's black and white and colour pictures. Goh's images are graphic and occasionally haunting studies of this multi-use, 140-plus-year-old site.
