A prostitute, who alleged a man posing as a policeman raped and robbed her, is a liar who was paid $50,000 to help ruin him, a court heard yesterday.

The accusation came from John Marray, defence counsel for Wong Ka-wai - who has pleaded not guilty to one charge of rape and another of robbery.

Cross-examining his client's accuser, Mr Marray said: 'You have made false allegations against the defendant because you are helping someone to make false allegations against the defendant. And it is even suggested that later on you received a sum of money to do this ... and that money was $50,000.'

Mr Marray spent much of the day questioning the woman, who at the time of the alleged offences was visiting Hong Kong on a seven-day tourist visa and working illegally as a prostitute.

He concentrated on police statements made by the alleged victim on May 26 last year - the day of the offence - and June 6, 2004. He questioned why the woman had apparently claimed in the first statement that she could not see her attacker's sex organ but said in the second that she had seen it.

The woman denied there was any discrepancy. 'There is a difference between seeing and looking,' she told the District Court through an interpreter.
