Although Jimmy Van M started off as a travel agent, it was his career as a DJ that provided the passport to a life as a global jet-setter.
Van M - which stands for Malleghem - is one of the biggest American names in progressive house music and has a monthly residency at New York's Twilo nightclub, where he spins with the likes of Sasha and John Digweed.
The partnership started in the mid-1990s, when Sasha was booked to play in Orlando, Florida, but had nowhere to stay. Van M - who by that stage had already earned a formidable reputation locally for his skills behind the decks - opened his home to the Welshman.
Apparently over extended sessions on Van M's trampoline, the pair formed a plan to exploit the explosive potential for electronic music in the US and the Northern Exposure tour was born. The tour - preserved on two top-selling compilation CDs - exposed the US clubbing masses to the cream of progressive house and has gone down as one of the most influential dance music events.
Progressive house is a form of dance music that takes the foundation of house and adds an array of layers, whether vocals or sound effects. This constant progression of sounds gives the DJs the material to sculpt well-rounded sets full of huge build-ups and deep breakdowns.
