Think a typical accountant is a late 30s balding guy with thick eyeglasses, nose hair and a heavy suit? Think again.

Re-packaged and thoroughly re-branded, Hong Kong's bean counters have had a makeover. It started with a new name and this month the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants' launched a new magazine. The former Hong Kong Accountant just became A Plus and accountants, would you believe, 'just got cool' - at least according to the cover article, which features four models in super-sharp Italian suits.

Why does a steady but boring professionals' publication suddenly turn into a trendy fashion magazine?

Could it be for the same reason that 40-something, balding accountants leave their wives and buy red sports cars?

Not a bit, according to a spokeswoman for the institute, who informed us: 'Accounting is a dynamic profession and this magazine presents an image of being up-to-date, dynamic and modern.'
