Singer Alex Fong Lik-sun has finally been tasked with promoting something other than sports. In his new role as ambassador for the English Festival 2005, he'll be encouraging better English skills through his music. Fong, Edmond Leung Hon-man and Yan Ng Yat-yin will appear at tonight's Wide Horizon Mini Concert at the Hong Kong International Trade and Exhibition Centre. The show is jointly organised by the South China Morning Post and Commercial Radio 2 and is aimed at university students. Fong says he feels that, since the handover, Hongkongers seem to have forgotten the importance of English. 'People have been focusing more on Putonghua since the handover. English is one of Hong Kong's advantages over the mainland and other Asian countries such as Japan or South Korea. 'If we don't keep up our standard of English and just learn Putonghua, we'll lose out to mainland students. We'll just be learning what they already know and forget what we're good at.' Fong's turbulent relationship with Twins member Gillian Chung Yan-tung has been grabbing headlines recently. 'I get very upset about these negative news stories,' he says. 'Why do people have to write this nonsense? I know it's part and parcel of being in the public eye. I try to keep my emotions under control and avoid falling into traps.' Meanwhile, Fong says he's in no rush to move into film. He wants to concentrate on his music career and improve his stage performance. 'Film is rather passive,' he says. 'You have to wait for the opportunity to come along. I would love to do action films.'
