The famous Cantonese voice of the heroine played by Korean actress Lee Young-ae (above left) in the hit soap opera Jewel in the Palace has become an inadvertent educationist. Friends of veteran dubbing artist Cheng Man-yee have been asking her to record short messages on home telephone lines and mobile phones telling their children to study hard and do their homework. 'It's hard to refuse when your friends ask you to tape encouraging messages for their children to become good students,' she told RTHK in a radio interview this week. Based on a real historical figure, the quasi-feminist heroine in the television series was a legendary palace chef, a pioneering herbal doctor, a courageous social reformer, a virtuous wife and a kind mother. She has come to exemplify all the Confucian virtues and then some. Even companies have been approaching Cheng to record dialogue for their automated phone answering systems, according to Apple Daily.
