I REFER to your reader's letter published on October 20, concerning the construction works at Baker Street.
The excavation in Baker Street commenced in February of this year.
It is for the construction of a large, 3.6m x 3.1m, concrete box culvert which will improve the drainage system in the area and alleviate flooding problems during times of heavy rain.
Baker Street is located in the very congested urban area where numerous underground utilities (including high voltage cables, water mains, gas mains and other drains) are present and occupy almost the full width of the road.
To construct the drainage culvert beneath these utilities is an extremely difficult and time-consuming job as very careful manual excavation has to be used between and under the utilities.
I would like to assure your correspondent that every effort has been, and will continue to be made, to minimise any inconvenience caused to the public.
Extensive traffic arrangements, such as bus re-routeings, have been made to alleviate the traffic congestion adjacent to the works site with the assistance of the Transport Department and Kowloon Motor Bus Co Ltd.
