Hong Kong-owned Artesyn Technologies has done so well in Zhongshan that it will raise production by a further 10 per cent and transfer all research and development to the city by year-end. 'Our research and development centre in Zhongshan has 100-plus local engineers,' said production manager Lawrence Chow. 'We plan to move all research and development activities to Zhongshan from North America this year.' A new research centre being built next to the plant will be entirely staffed by about 300 mainland engineers by next year. Mr Chow said the Zhongshan plant already produced 80 per cent of the company's global output of power-supply equipment, before the planned increase in production. Nasdaq-listed Artesyn had looked for sites in Shenzhen and Dongguan when it decided to relocate production from Taiwan to the mainland 20 years ago, but was not welcomed by either city. It then found a partner in the state-owned Zhongshan Carton Box General Factory Company and has since expanded the factory's workforce from 120 to 6,000 employees.
