Former Hong Kong goalkeeper Lau Tung-ping was jailed for five years yesterday for raping his maid. His sentence was cut from six years because the judge took into account his service as a member of the city's team and his otherwise unblemished record. Lau, 44, had pleaded not guilty to one charge of rape. It was the second time he faced a jury over the crime after his original six-year sentence was overturned last year. The jury found that on May 17, 2002, Lau raped his maid in the room she shared with his four-year-old daughter. The rape took place on a bed next to the one in which his daughter was sleeping. 'As an employer you should be responsible for the welfare of your employee,' said Mr Justice Pang Kin-kee in the Court of First Instance. 'Not only did you not do that, but you abused your position and raped her.' Lau had already served 14 months of a six-year sentence before being granted bail pending the retrial. He had originally been charged with five counts of rape for incidents which occurred during a period from May 3 to 17, 2002, but was pursued for just one at his July 2003 trial.
