Updated at 6.54pm: Business tycoon Li Ka-shing has donated US$40-million (HK$3.1 billion) to the University of California at Berkeley, local radio reported on Friday.
The university said the money, from the Li Ka Shing Foundation, would be used to establish a biomedical and health sciences centre focusing on new scientific research - including stem cell biology and brain imaging.
It said the new facility would be called the 'Li Ka-shing Centre for Biomedical and Health Sciences'.
Mr Li had earlier donated $1 billion to the University of Hong Kong, but this had resulted in controversy.
In gratitude for the donation, the university planned to attach Mr Li's name to its medical faculty - a move which has stirred criticism from some in Hong Kong.
A group of alumni doctors led by Kwok Ka-ki, a legislator representing the medical profession constituency, has staged protests against the university's plan.
Mr Li said on Wednesday he was deeply hurt by 'rude remarks' made in the wake of the offer from the university.
